Welcome to the Town of Arcadia!
The Town of Arcadia was formed from the Town of Lyons on February 15, 1825. The Town is comprised of approximately 31,000 acres stretching over 52.1 square miles of fertile soil and gently rolling drumlins. The highest point of Arcadia is Brantling Hill, Wayne County’s only ski slope, and the lowest point which is the Zurich Bog. The name Arcadia means “a scene of simple pleasure and quiet.” The town is known for the roses from Jackson & Perkins Co., Sarah Coventry jewelry, and the birth of Modern Spiritualism in the Hamlet of Hydesville, which is northwest of the village. It is alleged that Margaret and Katie Fox made contact with the spirit world on March 1, 1848. The Town of Arcadia includes the Village of Newark and 4 hamlets: Fairville, Marbletown, Hydesville, and Mud Mills. Today the population of the Town of Arcadia numbers 14,889, with 9,682 living in the Village of Newark. Newark is known as Wayne County’s center of industry, which is currently the home to the only hospital in Wayne County, Newark Wayne Community Hospital.
